As promised, here’s the story on this 3rd Rock’n'Soul Rumble I’ve been part of. First of all big thanks to Daniel Schneider and his Moods Club for having us there. I heard some rumors saying that some show members proved a really bad behaviour late in the night (please believe me I don’t know who and it certainly wasn’t me, because I was asleep at the Novotel by then). I really loathe undecent manners of anybody, but when it is some singular members of a 19-man-cast of a show it’s double embarassing for me, too. I here express my excuses to Dan, the Moods club and any staff that may have been concerned by this. Enough said, because I am actually not more than the hired MC of this troop of adults.
Coming to talk about the event, I have to admit it was a very nice experience playing in Zurich in front of an interested audience. The fact that the Fonxionaires and Brandy Butler won their 2nd title of hip-shaking champion was not very surprising. The fact the audience was very keen on funk and soul was obvious with an aftershow party called “real funk for real people”.
The Rock part was loud, very loud and this was another blow in Theo’s Fried Chicken Store’s chances, because the club was too small to bear this wall of noise.
In the end it was an easy game for the Fonxies. At least that’s what they thought, but they hadn’t made their calculation with the rumble umpire. An umpire would never let the people down and give them only 3 rounds of finghting, when they paid big money to see a 5 rounder. Final result 3-2 for the soul side of the game.
The following funk party was smashing good. A perfect mix of rare grooves and not too often heard raw and funky tracks. It had been quite a while since I last danced this freely and deeply on a WeFunk Radio-like selection of musical delights.
Moreover I got to know a new type of drink I had never tasted before: the Amaretto Sour. Wow, so good. This could become an all time favorite to me, because it doesn’t break your legs and lets you hold on time! Thanky Silas for this hint.
After a 30-minute struggle to get a room keycard for the correct room and having a good piece of laughter in doing so, we spent a marvellous night in the Novotel just next to the club.
The next morning I enjoyed chatting about the past events and the quite unclear future of the show concept with some band members during breakfast and on the trip back home by train. Thanks Sam, Stefan and Tobias for your technical support and the organisation of the event. Groovesound rules!
